The Wake-Up Call

This story continues from Chrono-Key Paradox.

Kaito's eyes snapped open. The familiar scent of synthetic fabric and cheap recycled air filled his nostrils. He was lying on a lumpy mattress in his small, dusty apartment. Dayton was still outside, but the rain had stopped, and the neon lights looked duller, less vibrant.

He slowly sat up, a residual chill lingering in his chest. He ran a hand through his hair, the memory of the Fujiwara-Tek guards and the smiling woman still vivid.

Holographic notification blinked in the corner of his vision over his nightstand: "Dream Sequence Logged. REM Cycle 4 complete. Mental Stress Level: Elevated."

Kaito sighed, the tension slowly draining from his shoulders. "Damn data-dreams," he muttered, reaching for the cheap synth-coffee on his bedside table. "Always gotta make it a world-ending crisis."

The Chrono-Key was just a persistent rumor in the deep net, a fantasy. He was still just Kaito, a small-time data-ghost in a his apartment, looking for his next honest (or semi-honest) gig in Dayton.

He took a slow sip of the bitter coffee, the taste of reality washing away the last lingering traces of code and paradox. The biggest threat to the world today was just finding enough credits to pay the rent.
