Journal Entry - The Lemon Grove
The air tonight carried a ghost of citrus. Strange, how a smell can claw its way through memory stronger than blood or gunpowder. Somewhere past the ruins of the old highway, I stumbled into a grove–lemons, half-wild now, branches bowed with stubborn fruit. The world has rotted, but here, among cracked irrigation pipes and weeds swallowing the earth, the trees refuse to quit.
I picked a lemon. The rind was thick, gnarled, spotted with scars from drought, but when I broke it open, the scent burst out sharp and clean, like a blade cutting through rot. For a moment, I was sixteen again, barefoot in the orchards outside Calvessa, juice sticky on my hands, sun burning my shoulders. My mother's voice was there too, warning me not to eat too many or I'd ruin my stomach. I would kill for her nagging now.

The sourness burned my tongue. I didn't care. I ate it down to the bitter pith, eyes watering. It tasted like life refusing to give in.
I don't know how long these groves will last. Raiders will burn them, or the soil will finally surrender. But for now, they stand. I stood among them with juice dripping from my chin, J.W. Cheetah 1911 pistol heavy at my side, and felt something I hadn't in a long time.
Hope.
