Neon Salvation

This story continues from Neon Requiem.

In the dead of night, Neon City's alleys pulsed with a fragile silence, broken only by the drip of acid rain from rusted overhangs. Kael lay crumpled against a dumpster, his glowing retinal implants flickering erratically, blood pooling beneath him from a drone's plasma shot. The datachip run for Vex had gone sideways–Arclight enforcers had ambushed him, and the untraceable promise had turned into a death sentence.

In the Chrome Veil CyberBar, Vex is shocked with wide eyes. She turns and walks swiftly out the door. She jumps onto her u.r.FOXy Hover Cycle, parked out front, and rides into the night.

She rode across the town into the alley. Her hover cycle came to a stop next to the dumpster. Her silhouette sharp against the neon haze of a hacked billboard still flashing “KAEL WAS HERE.” Her hair, face, and body glistened with rain. She took a compact medkit from the hover bike. Her eyes scanned the alley as she knelt beside him. "You're a mess, runner. You poor fool!" she muttered, her voice cutting through the synthwave hum leaking from a distant club. She yanked a stimpack from the kit, jabbing it into Kael's neck. His body jerked, implants stabilizing as the nanites kicked in, sealing the wound with a faint hiss.

She straps a backpack like harness onto him and straps him to her back such as a backpack. She cuffs his hands around her waist.

"Move, or we're both dead," Vex whispered to herself, hauling him up. Kael's legs wobbled, but her stance was iron. She dragged him onto the hoverbike, its engine whining to life as drones' searchlights swept the alley. Bullets pinged off the walls, but Vex gunned the throttle, weaving through the megacorporate sprawl. Kael clung to her, his vision blurring between code streams and the neon blur of escape, not quite conscious.

They ducked into an abandoned warehouse on the hover cycle, the air thick with dust and the glow of jury-rigged terminals. Vex unloaded him onto the ground and patched him further, her fingers deft on a portable med-drone. "You owe me, Kael," she said to the unconscious Kael, her smile a neon-edged blade. "Next run's on you–and it's going to be bigger."

The abandoned warehouse thrummed with the faint hum of jury-rigged terminals, their neon light slicing through the dust-choked air. Vex crouched low next to Kael. The drone searchlights' echo still lingering from their escape. Kael's breathing hitched, his retinal implants flickering as the stimpack's effect faded. Vex knelt beside him, studying his face.

A rusted door slid open with a hiss, revealing two figures. The first was a wiry female doctor--Dr. Lena Moss. Her patched lab coat adorned with flickering bio-sensors, her face half-hidden by a respirator mask glowing with blue LEDs. Beside her stood a broad-shouldered male doctor--Dr. Marcus Drayce--his weathered coat stained with synth-fluid, a portable surgical kit dangling from his gloved hand. “He's bleeding out,” the female doctor said, her voice sharp yet steady. The male nodded, grunting, “Move him–now.”
